Eagle´s nest hike FAQ- Everything you need to know

  • Yes. While most visitors reach the Eagle’s Nest by bus, it is absolutely possible to hike there. Our guided route takes you through forest trails and alpine terrain, offering a much more immersive experience.

  • The hike is considered moderate. It covers approximately 6.5 km with around 700 meters of elevation gain, on easy terrain. A basic level of fitness is required, but no special technical ability. The guide will make sure an appropriate pace is set to make the experience enjoyable.

  • The full tour takes around 5 to 6 hours, including hiking time, breaks, historical explanations along the route and of course the visit to the Eagle´s Nest and back.

    The hiking it self takes in average 2:30 hours.

  • No. The Eagle’s Nest is typically open from May to October, depending on weather conditions. Our tours operate during this season. The expected opening date for the 2026 season is the 7th of May.

  • The bus tour takes you directly to the top via a road and elevator with all the people.

    Our hike allows you to experience the mountain step by step off the beaten path — combining compact forest trails, hidden WW2 stops, physical effort, and a deeper understanding of the historical context of the site. On our hike we get to experience the famous elevator ride as well. Overall the hike is more than just a tour, is an experience.

  • We recommend:

    • comfortable shoes (light trailrunners)

    • weather-appropriate clothing (extra shirt to change into at the top)

    • water

    • a small snack (banana, powerbar or chocolate)

    Weather in the mountains can change quickly, so layered clothing is recommended.

  • Tours run in most weather conditions. However, your guide may modify or cancel the tour if conditions pose a safety risk.

  • The meeting point for our tour is outside the main entrance of the Berggashof Obesalzberg restaurant, just opposite from Parking 1.

  • We keep our groups small, with a maximum of 7 participants, to ensure a personal and safe experience.

  • No advanced experience is required, but you should be comfortable walking on mountain trails for several hours.

  • If you have a reasonable level of fitness and enjoy walking, the hike is suitable. However, it is not a casual stroll and requires effort as well walk uphill. Total elevation gain is 700 meters or 2100 feet and we cover a distance of 7 kilometers or 4 miles

  • Yes. Your guide is experienced and prioritizes safety at all times. The route takes place on an official maintained trail. The bus ride down from the Eagle´s Nest is operated by the German Railways.

  • This depends on age and fitness level. Please contact us in advance to discuss suitability.

  • Dogs may be allowed if they are well-behaved and kept on a leash. Please check with us before booking.

  • You can book directly through our website using the booking calendar on the Eagle´s Nest hike page. You will get a confirmation of your booking soon after.

  • Yes. You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the tour. Late cancellations may be charged.

  • If we cancel due to weather or safety reasons, you will be offered an alternative date or a full refund.
